Before You Go On Your Boat: Safety Tips You Must Always Follow

Here at Thunder on the Gulf, we care very much about the safety of boaters and mariners everywhere. We wanted to give you a few safety tips to keep in mind before you ship out. Always remember that your safety is paramount above all else.

So if you want to take your boat out or to rent out a boat, here are a few safety tips to remember:

Check the Weather

No matter how placid or seemingly safe a body of water is, that can easily change with bad weather or even strong winds. This is why it is always important to consult weather channels and sites to determine if today would be a good day to head out on your boat.

If the advisory says that bad weather is ahead—even if it doesn’t really look it—we hope that you follow the advisory anyway. It is better that you lose a single day out on the water than to lose your life entirely, right?

Tell Someone Your Location

If you are going to go out on your boat, it is important that someone knows about it. It can be a loved one or a friend; it could even be the staff at the boating association that you are part of. This is important in case of freak bad weather.

If someone knows that you are out in the water, they will know right away what sort of help you’ll need in case they cannot contact you.

Always have Safety Gear

Safety is always of utmost importance. No matter how much experience you’ve had over the water or behind the wheel of a powerboat, it is always good to wear safety gear. Do not let luxurious shots on Instagram or glamour shots on magazines fool you. No matter what, it is always important to have safety gear—especially if children are in the picture.

Strength In Numbers: Why Is It Worth Joining a Boat Association?

For a long time now, we have found the necessity to defend the existence of boat associations. While this debate is frequently mentioned in the media, this is something that is directly relevant to us and our members so we wanted to discuss it. Today, we wanted to talk about why is it worth joining a boat association.

Don’t let our personal bias speak for us; here are a few things that we have received through member feedback:

Planned Group Outings

One of the things that we personally have enjoyed is the fact that boat associations make it a point to organize group outings and gatherings for members and their families. A strong sense of community is always important for boat associations.

This can be better obtained through planned group outings.

Lessons and Classes

boat-classes Boat Associations care very much about the working knowledge of their members and those that care to learn more about boats, sailing, and all that good water sport stuff. They (like us) regularly hold classes which can help improve the understanding of those that want to try out being on a boat and even competing one day.

There aren’t a lot of sources wherein organizations outside of schools have active classes that teach more about going on boats.

Insurance

When it comes to anything that has any risk to your health and safety, it is always important to have proper insurance for it. While there are big insurance firms that do not like providing policies for those that enjoy risky sports, you can always rely on boat associations to have you covered.

After all, they need to make sure that those that sail, row, or zoom around under their watch are well protected.

These are just a few reasons why we think it is worth joining a boat association. What about on your end? What benefits have you experienced from a boat association?

In order to be one of the best, you need to be in good physical condition. Isn’t it great that you can combine both through boating? The more you go on a boat, the better your fitness gets.
