Water, but not salt
The water in Geres is a reservoir and a river system, not a surf line. The N308 follows the Canicada shoreline. The Pedra Bela overlook looks down on a drowned valley, forest and the village folded into the hill. A tour around the park makes the same point on foot: short paths, the dam at dusk, villages that still work. The Gulf is speed on flat water and a sky that goes on. Geres is patience on a wall of stone, with a reservoir below and weather that turns in a valley. Book the day for the park, not for the boulevard out of Lisbon. If the first day is only highway, the flight was used on the wrong road.
Read the park notes, leave early from the airport, and keep enough light for the granite. The interesting work starts when the asphalt stops pretending to be a coastal straightaway.
